How to avoid Powerball lottery scams

To avoid becoming a victim of a Powerball lottery scam, make sure to only buy Powerball lottery tickets from an official, licensed lottery retailer. State lottery websites will have a list of their official retailers, so double-check online if you're unsure, and to find out which is your closest location.

Lotteries will never inform you that you have won a prize via email or telephone unless you have entered an official lottery contest or promotion. Additionally, lotteries never ask winners to pay a fee to collect a Powerball prize, so be wary of anyone asking you for money and never share your personal information with someone you don't trust.

Facebook users have reported seeing posts that say Powerball is giving money away on social media, but these posts are fraudulent and should be ignored.

In June 2019, a scammer posed as a jackpot winner and attempted to scam residents of North Carolina by offering to donate $4 million to an organization. The scammer asked for $500 as a minimum deposit in the banking account that would donate. Additionally, scammers were using photos of the winner on social media and posted about giving money away in return for followers.

Mark Michalko, executive director of the N.C. Education Lottery said in a statement: "Unfortunately, scams like these are all too common. Anyone who makes a promise of a donation or prize but wants you to give money first is trying to trick you. Never give your money or personal information to these people."
