Help local schools with their substitute teacher shortage by becoming one!

Eastern Iowa Community Colleges (EICC) is offering its Substitute Teacher Authorization course in March and June. Students who sign up now can be leading an Iowa classroom this fall. Substitute teaching is an excellent part-time job for parents, retirees or anyone who wants to be in control of their schedules while making a difference in the lives of students.

In 2022, the median annual wage for substitute teachers was $35,250, according to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, and the need is growing. The bureau estimates 17,400 new positions will need to be filled in the U.S. between now and 2032.

The course at EICC course covers ethics, classroom management, diversity and instructional strategies. The course can be completed in two successive Saturday sessions:

March 16 and 23

June 15 and 22

Substitute teachers in Iowa must be at least 20 years old and hold an associate degree, or paraeducator certificate or who have earned 60 credit hours from a regionally accredited institution. After completing the course and meeting all Iowa Educational Examiners requirements, students can be authorized to substitute in K-12 classrooms.
